Millions of people from around the globe will visit the Osaka Expo 2025 to discover how nations and regions are tackling some of the most pressing global challenges of our time, such as sustainability, connectivity, inclusivity, and security.
The EU pavilion will showcase its commitment to these themes through immersive installations inspired by the core principles of the New European Bauhaus - aesthetics, sustainability, and inclusion.
The EU’s presence will not only highlight the strong political, economic, and sociocultural ties it shares with Japan but also emphasise the importance of science cooperation. It will also demonstrate how research and innovation shape our daily lives.

Several EU-funded projects will be featured at the Expo during specific thematic weeks, showcasing groundbreaking scientific achievements, innovative solutions, and cutting-edge technologies. Some of the projects will also be highlighted in the EU pavilion’s permanent exhibition through avatars.
Co-creating Cultures for the Future
25 April 2025 – 6 May 2025
The EU-funded ODEUROPA and GreenArt will explore how diverse cultures can resonate and co-create future cultures.
ODEUROPA is the first pan-European initiative to use AI to create a library of historic smells. Between 2020-2023, it extracted scent-related information from 43,000 images and 167,000 books in seven languages, amassing over 2.5 million smell references for the European Olfactory Knowledge Graph.
GreenArt produces safe and effective solutions for the conservation of culture heritage, using environmentally friendly materials from renewable sources or recycled waste. Their innovative materials include protective coatings from waste-based green materials and plant proteins, biodegradable foams and packaging, and gels and cleaning fluids made from natural waste.
Health and well-being
20 June 2025 – July 1, 2025
Nature-In explores the connection between post-war Danish buildings and traditional Japanese buildings, where the interior space is closely linked to nature. Through this study, a MSCA-supported fellow explores how to better integrate nature in interior spaces and provide a catalogue with sustainable nature-inclusive devices.
The Nature-In session will take place on 20-21 June 2025.
Learning and Playing
17 July 2025 – 28 July 2025
CURSOR has developed a Search and Rescue Kit using drones, miniaturised robotic equipment, and advanced sensors to reduce the time needed for detecting and rescuing victims trapped under debris, while increasing the personal safety of the rescue teams. The project will showcase their SMURF robot, equipped with both video and audio sensors, capable of determining whether a human trapped under rubble is alive or not.
The CURSOR demonstration of the SMURF robot will take place on 18-22 July 2025.
Peace, Human Security and Dignity
1 August 2025 – 12 August 2025
QSI is training a world-class cohort of doctoral candidates in cybersecurity, working towards a “Quantum-Safe Internet” - a communication infrastructure that is secure against both classical attacks and quantum technology enabled attacks.
Other related events
In addition to the EU-funded projects featured during the Expo’s theme weeks, several other events will showcase the EU’s research and innovation achievements. The EUCYS Osaka EXPO Prize and the Horizon Europe Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ seminar are just two examples.
The EU agri-food business delegation to Japan, led by the EU Agriculture and Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen, will also be present at the World Expo Osaka for a special high-level event.
