The EU Pavilion at the COP 29 will serve as an information and networking hub to explore what the EU is doing at home and around the world to reach its climate action commitments.
This year, several EU-funded projects managed by the European Research Executive Agency will be virtually present in Baku, showcasing important scientific results to foster global cooperation. Make sure to register to follow the events!

Description
On Monday, 11 November 2024 (10:00-11:30 CET)
The EU-funded OceanICU and SUMMER projects are participating in a webinar that will discuss the ocean carbon cycle from different perspectives. The event is part of the virtual Ocean Pavilion "The Ocean Carbon Cycle: Bridging science, policy development and concrete action".
Measuring and modelling the ocean carbon sink
Slowing the rate of climate change, the ocean acts as a carbon sink. It absorbs 25 % of the CO2 we emit to the atmosphere, but it is not easy to measure and model carbon uptake. To the rescue comes the OceanICU project that measures these key processes and evaluate their overall significance.
Sustainable management of mesopelagic resources
Recent research suggests that the mesopelagic zone of oceans contains 90% of the planet’s fish biomass. But as the role of mesopelagic fish is not understood in terms of the ecosystem, it is first necessary to establish tools to accurately estimate their biomass and the interspecies impact at that level. Using eDNA, acoustics and gut analysis among other tools, the SUMMER project explores the environmental repercussions of such exploitation.
On Tuesday, 19 November (14:00 - 15:30 CET)
The EU-funded REFOREST is participating in an event that will focus on exploring the diverse financing schemes for sustainable land use. The session is part of the Mediterranean Pavilion at COP 29.
Agroforestry yields essential products such as food and timber, at the same time ensuring the protection of biodiversity so the natural environment continues to provide its resources and other benefits. REFOREST aims to overcome the barriers to wider agroforestry adoption in Europe. To do so, they encourage knowledge exchange amongst stakeholders, provide solutions to farmers, and propose relevant policy interventions.
