Horizon Europe - Research Infrastructures: European Commission signs grant agreements with 27 projects

The Commission will now invest €180 million to ensure European scientists can conduct ground-breaking research.

Background

Research infrastructures are facilities, resources, and services that allow researchers in Europe to conduct ground-breaking R&I. It includes research laboratories, scientific instrumentation and technologies, data resources, computational tools, and communication networks. 

The European Commission funds these through Horizon Europe - Research Infrastructures. This allows the EU to foster ground-breaking innovation to benefit citizens and society.  

2022: the calls for proposals for funding

In 2022, the European Research Executive Agency (REA) launched calls for proposals for EU funding under Research Infrastructures. REA received 79 proposals by the call deadline on 22 April 2022. The total requested budget was €551.9 million across the calls.

Following evaluations, 27 projects have been selected for EU funding. These projects signed their grant agreements on 22 December 2022. Now, the European Commission will invest €180.07 million into these projects, which will start their research in the coming weeks.

The 2022 calls for proposals for funding were divided into three destinations, as follows.

 

Developing the European research infrastructures landscape, maintaining global leadership (INFRADEV 2022)

Research infrastructure concept development (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-DEV-01-01)

 

Cooperation, synergies and networking between research infrastructures and technology infrastructures (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-DEV-01-02)

 

Proposals

31 proposals received with a total requested budget of €109.8 million

Following evaluations

9 projects have been selected for EU funding with €25.57 million to be invested

 

 

Enabling an operational, open and fair EOSC Ecosystem (INFRAEOSC 2022)

 

Topics

Improving and coordinating technical infrastructure for institutional open access publishing across Europe/ Building with the scientific community a Web of Fair data for open science (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-EOSC-01-02)

2023: new calls for proposals for funding
