As part of Horizon Europe, the European Commission funds world-class research infrastructures in order to build an integrated European landscape. In turn, this will foster the development of emerging technologies and groundbreaking research.

Under ‘Horizon Europe: Research Infrastructures’, three calls were launched in order to support the Commission’s aims in creating a cohesive and world-leading European research arena.

The calls that closed on the 20th of April were the second calls for funding opportunities under these topics.

According to the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2021-2022: Research Infrastructures, a total of seven topics will be researched across these three calls. The total available budget is €161.8 million.

The breakdown of the three calls

For the Developing, Consolidating and Optimising the European Research Infrastructures Landscape, Maintaining Global Leadership, or INFRADEV 2022, call (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-DEV-01), REA received 31 proposals totaling a requested budget of €109.9 million. The available budget for this call is €21.8 million.

According to the Work Programme, the expected research outcomes of this call will centre on two topics: cooperation and networking between research infrastructures and the development of these infrastructures. Eight projects are expected to be funded.

For the Enabling an Operational, Open and FAIR EOSC Ecosystem, or INFRAEOSC 2022, call (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-EOSC-01) REA received 9 proposals totaling €42.7 million. The available budget is €30 million.

According to the Work Programme, the expected outcomes of the four topics to be funded will focus on open data sharing in support of healthy oceans and seas, generating global standards for the open-sharing of data and software, and developing the tools and services to assist open science practices, amongst others. Seven projects are expected to be funded.

For the Next Generation of Scientific Instrumentation, Tools and Methods and Advanced Digital Solutions, or INFRATECH 2020, call (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-TECH-01), REA received 39 proposals for a requested budget of €399.7 million. The total available budget is €110 million.

According to the Work Programme, one topic will be funded with the expected outcomes examining the modelling and simulating complex phenomena at the service of research infrastructure communities. 11 projects are expected to be funded.

The next steps

The evaluation of the proposals will start presently with the support of external independent evaluators drawn from the European Commission database of experts.

In September 2022, REA will notify the projects that were successful in their applications. The grant agreements are to be signed in December 2022.
