EU Open Doors Day 2023

On 6 May, the European Commission opens its doors. This year, researchers from Spain, Belgium, Germany and Italy will be in the Green Europe and Skilled Europe villages to showcase their projects, preparing experiments and other interactive activities. Join us and learn more about EU-funded research and innovation and the projects REA manages.

Green Europe Village  

INDESMOF: cleaning up polluted water

The main objective of the INDESMOF project, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie action, is to remediate the heavy metals water pollution, derived from either natural sources or anthropogenic activities, as well as to improve and exchange interdisciplinary knowledge in order to develop membrane and filtering devices.

The project was funded under the Horizon 2020 programme and contributes to one of the European Commission’s missions: Restore our Ocean and Waters.

Activity: Circular water economy

For the EU Open Doors Day, INDESMOF will perform a live experiment, demonstrating how to detoxify water while recovering target elements!

CLEARING HOUSE: restoring urban landscapes

The CLEARING HOUSE project provides evidence and tools that facilitate mobilising the full potential of urban forests as nature-based solutions for rehabilitating, reconnecting, and restoring urban ecosystems.

Clearing House was funded under the Horizon 2020 programme and contributes to the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities mission.

Activity: City of trees

At the EU Open Day, the project’s team will prepare hands-on activities: sensory experiences, mandala making corner, mindfulness exercises and a “forest cover” co-creation exercise, with forest pictures and a forest soundscape. The visitors will also interact with the LOUPE app, which invites visitors to indicate their favourite forest, and how they feel it impacts their health and wellbeing.​

EdiCitNet: creating urban food solutions

EdiCitNet addresses societal challenges in cities, including mass urbanization, social inequality and climate change. The project systematically explores the wealth and diversity of existing Edible City Solutions and highlights the importance of healthy soils for growing healthy food, while adapting plans and implementing successfully proven Edible City Solutions in their specific urban context.

EdiCitNet is running under the Horizon 2020 funding programme, also contributing to the A Soil Deal for Europe mission.

Activity: Planting2Go 

For the EU Open Doors Day, the project’s researchers will raise awareness about how easy and accessible it is to grow food in cities, while also informing participants about the benefits of it by offering them the opportunity of planting a seed of their choice on-site in a container that can then be taken home.

Skilled Europe Village  

SURFICE: designing smart surfaces for safe transport and infrastructures 

The project funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions directly contributes to safer roads and novelty defrosting solutions. Researchers are trained by experts in materials and surface sciences, physics and engineering. The advanced anti-icing technologies will be applied in aeronautics, energy systems and sensor technologies, as well as the glass manufacturing and automotive industries through industrial partners. 

Activity: Is that a solid or a liquid? 

At the EU Open Doors Day, researchers will explore the boundaries between solids, liquids and gases while allowing you to create your own slime with a hands-on experiment. Moreover, the interactive experience will show how some materials can present properties of both solids and liquids under certain conditions.
